Case Study: Power To Perform
Showjumper and veterinary physiotherapist, Lily Buckle, needed a feed that would provide her horse with instant, off the leg energy, whilst being palatable as her horse can be very fussy. Lily came back to us with the following feedback:
I chose to feed Saracen Horse Feeds in my first year of university as a veterinary physiotherapist, about 5 years ago, after seeing the huge amount of science based research behind Saracen Horse Feeds. I believe it’s so important to feed our horses a high quality feed so they’re able to perform their best, recover and support their ridden career.
As a veterinary physiotherapist, it is important to ensure that horses receive the right balance of nutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, fats and minerals. Meeting these requirements is essential for supporting muscle development, energy levels, immune function and overall health. My horse Charlie is super fussy with his food and requires that extra instant energy in his feeding regime to ensure he has maximal power productivity for work.
Before feeding Saracen Competition-Fit Mix Charlie would occasionally have a little outburst of energy and then feel extremely sluggish which would lead to him starting to knock poles. However, since feeding Saracen Competition-Fit Mix he has finally started finishing his feed which is extremely rare for Charlie, but I have also noticed a huge difference in his performance and showjumping.
Competition-Fit Mix is a high-energy performance feed formulated to meet the requirements of the equine athlete. The mix utilises a variety of processed cereals, including oats, barley and maize, to provide instant energy during work periods helping to support optimal energy levels and added ‘sparkle’. Processing the cereals ensures optimal digestion and absorption in the small intestine, helping to maintain a healthy digestive system. The inclusion of alfalfa pellets helps to ‘top up’ the performance horse’s fibre intake as well as ensuring that the horse has adequate water intake throughout work/competition by providing a water store in the gut, therefore reducing the effects of dehydration. Oil is added to the ration to help support optimal stamina levels as well as encouraging excellent skin and coat condition. High quality protein sources support cell, tissue and muscle repair as well as encouraging topline and muscle development in conjunction with a suitable work regime. Competition-Fit Mix is fully fortified with vitamins and chelated minerals. These minerals are more readily available to the horse than traditional inorganic minerals, because they are bound to a protein molecule that is more easily absorbed during digestion. Chelated minerals can complement natural stress resistance and help the immune system, whilst improving coat bloom, and skin and hoof quality. The inclusion of a live yeast helps support a healthy environment in the hindgut, which is especially important in performance horses that maybe fed lower forage and higher concentrate feed rations. Yeast also has many other benefits including optimum feed utilisation and maintenance of appetite in the performance horse. The addition of a unique red apple flavouring encourages even the fussiest feeders to eat well.
