Feeding The Young Competition Horse
Finding the balance between weight management & temperament can be tricky especially in young horses.
Area feed adviser Nic Read suggested feeding Dream, a 4-year-old dressage horse on RE-LEVE®-MIX to ensure that she was getting all the nutrients that she required on a daily basis whilst having the optimum balance of energy for weight maintenance and work.
When choosing a feed for a young horse going into the autumn it is important to consider how much time the horse will be spending in the stable, their temperament and how much work you intend to do with them through the winter months. We would recommend feeding a diet that is based on fibre and oil rather than cereals to avoid exacerbating fizzy temperaments.
RE-LEVE®-MIX is cereal free, low starch mix that has been formulated for horses in work that react to high starch diets or are prone to Equine Gastric Ulcers. The use of alternative energy sources optimises power generation and recovery, providing controlled energy from highly digestible “Super-Fibres” and oils. In addition, RE-LEVE®-MIX is fully fortified with an extensive range of vitamins and minerals along with a yeast and vitamin E inclusion, to maintain normal muscle function and support immune health. The mix also contains a blackcurrant flavour to maintain palatability in the fussiest of feeders.
