Sales Prep

Microsteed analyses the nutrient contribution from all feeds, roughages and supplements against set nutrient requirements. During Sales Prep, Microsteed can be adjusted to match the intensity of prep work required for each individual.

This example shows a yearling during sales prep fed Stud Prep 14 with Equi-Jewel alongside alfalfa chaff and typical hay.

Microsteed for weanlings and yearlings is often used in conjunction with Gro-Trac, KER's growth monitoring programme, to ensure a steady and correct growth rate.

Daily Intake of nutrients

Intake of Stud Prep 14 and Equi-Jewel can be adjusted to the individual needs depending on frame size, precocity and overall body condition. Consistently providing above baseline requirements supports the body during a time of change and increased exercise.

All nutrients have an optimum range for intake, which Microsteed analyses and conveys in easy-to-read charts. Any deficit or excess intake will be discussed with you by a member of the Saracen Thoroughbred Team. Where additional supplements may be needed for which there is no set requirement, such as MSM, for example, such recommendations are made within the diet report.

Optimum nutrient ranges

In addition to considering total daily intake, Microsteed will also consider the balance of key minerals in the total diet including calcium, phosphorus, zinc and copper. The balance of minerals influences absorption and also activity within the body.

Once nutrient intake and balance is considered, Microsteed also assesses the contribution nutrients make toward energy requirements. Energy intake directly relates to growth rate and the balance of energy provided can be influential when managing growth related disorders.

Saracen’s Thoroughbred team can provide Microsteed evaluations customised with forage and pasture results to give a clear picture. Through understanding the profile of various feeds and relevant forages, diets can be adjusted as needed throughout the season to ensure the best results are achieved.
